Lesson 2.5 DESIGN - Companion planting
FOOD FOREST COURSE
DESIGN - Companion planting
Companion planting is the planting of different crops
in close physical proximity (in gardening and agriculture), on the theory that
they assist each other in nutrient uptake, pest
control, pollination, and other factors necessary to increasing crop
productivity.
Although there is a wealth of information on its
historic use, there remains limited available scientific research on the
effectiveness for each of these interventions.
Companion planting is used by farmers and gardeners in both industrialised and developing countries for many reasons. Many of the modern principles of companion planting were present many centuries ago in the cottage garden.
