AGRO-ECONOMY Lesson 4.2

MULCH - Different kind of Mulch.

Chop and drop from any of the support species.
Leaves from deciduous trees, which drop their foliage in the autumn.  As they decompose, they adhere to each other but also allow water and moisture to seep down to the soil surface.

Fresh grass clippings can damage plants when they rot as their rotting often produces a damaging build-up of trapped heat.  Grass clippings should therefore be dried before applying as a mulch.

A thin layer of fresh grass clippings covered with a layer of dry mulch hay is the most advantageous way of using this material.

Wood chips, are a by-product of the pruning of trees by arborists, utilities and parks; they are used to dispose of bulky waste.

Tree branches and large stems are rather coarse after chipping and tend to be used as a mulch at least three inches thick.

The chips are used to conserve soil moisture, moderate soil temperature and suppress weed growth.  Freshly produced chips from trees consume nitrates as they decay so these are best kept to pathways.

Sawdust is best avoided on the garden beds for the same reason as wood chips, but these make excellent pathways.
Mulch hay is useful in the early stages of building the food forest garden until there is enough support species for a mulch supply.

Crushed stone mulch in the form of crusher dust for pathways in the garden.
Living mulches are plants that grow close to the ground, under the main crop, to slow the development of weeds and provide other benefits of mulch.

They are usually fast-growing plants that continue growing with the main crops.  However, living mulches also may need to be cleared at intervals if it takes over from the main crops.

Text from the roots, Elisabeth Ferkonia (Aus.) PDC studied with Bill Mollison.
