AGRO-ECONOMY Lesson 6.10
RICE BEANS - Vigna umbellata
The rice bean
is a sprawling vine that will grow along the ground or on a trellis. It is primarily grown as a cover crop but the
small rice like beans are edible. It is
not a tropical legume such as the other legumes covered here but it is commonly
grown in our subtropical Permaculture gardens.
The rice bean originates from the Himalayas and
central China. This bean does seem to
adapt very well to differing habitats and it will generally self-seed in the
garden year after year as it needs very little looking after except for some
watering in long, hot, and dry spells.
To be able to harvest the beans it is important to pick them just prior
full maturity as they will otherwise shatter and drop their seed
everywhere. This shattering effect is
very useful as when the pods have been picked and put out to dry, they will open
by themselves. This makes it so easy to
separate the dry pods from the rice beans.
A whole lot of beans can be harvested very quickly by gently flicking
off the dry pods and shaking the bean seeds into a corner of the container.
The seed are also very suitable for sprouting and are
a great source of folic acid.
The young pods can be steamed and eaten whole as well.
