HORSRADISH TREE – DRUMSTICK TREE Moringa oleifera
CULTIVATION
The seeds need
to be relatively fresh and the weather sufficiently warm for good
germination. The planted seed needs to
be protected from rats and mice as they can sniff them out and dig them up
because of the nutty flavour. Cuttings
of about 30 cm in length can be taken at the end of winter through until
summer, but the cut ends need to dry out before planting. This is to prevent likelihood of rot. The cuttings should then be planted into a
50:50 mix of sharp river sand and potting soil to about a third of their
length. Trees grown from seed seem to
develop a stronger taproot and tend to be more drought resistant.
It is important to keep the tree well pruned to be able to continue harvesting the leaves, as they can be harvested all year round. Horseradish trees should begin to bear pods during their first year and by their third year the trees can produce several hundred pods although the tree in the community gardens hasn’t really flowered yet, and after about four years we’re still waiting!
The pods freeze well so they can be kept handy for cooking long after harvest time. The trees like a well-drained, sunny position and they can be planted as living fences. Livestock enjoy the pruning’s as they are a legume and hence rich in protein, and this makes it a valuable nutritional addition for everyone.
