Lesson 6.28.0 LEBANESE
CRESS - Aethionema cordifolum
CULTIVATION
Lebanese cress
is a perennial that will grow like a ground cover when there is enough even
moisture available. It will simply
disappear in a drought when there is no irrigation. Over the winter it can easily disappear only
to come back again when the summer rains arrive. I have had trouble over the years keeping
mine going and have found that a damp shady position seems to be the
ideal. Lebanese cress has an attractive
coriander like appearance and is a decorative addition to salads. It does not have the typical pungent taste of
cress but it is a land cress nonetheless.
The feathery leaves will reach to about a foot or so in ideal growing
conditions.
I’ve had great success in growing this land cress in the shade garden. This garden has shade cloth of 50% over it and it makes an excellent summer garden.
Text from the roots, Elisabeth Ferkonia (Aus.) PDC studied with Bill
Mollison.
