MALU KHIYYA - Cultivation
Malu Khiyya,
Egyptian spinach or Salad Mallow are three other names given to this annual
bush. It is a favoured source of greens
in the Middle Eastern countries but originated in India. The leaves are very nutrient rich and they
are also rich in potassium and protein, but they have a light mucilage
taste. The young leaves especially are a
useful addition in salads, while the older leaves are best used as a spinach.
CULTIATION
Malu Khia is a shrub that grows to a metre high, but
as it is an annual it will die down in the cooler winter months. It is very hardy and easy to grow and can be
grown both from seed and cuttings. I
have found that even very small seedlings are very hardy and can be confidently
planted all over the garden with a very high success rate. At maturity lots of little yellow flowers
will form small seedpods. The seedpods
will dry on the bush and shatter open and release lots of seed to be self-sown
for the next growing season. I have only
grown this plant for one season at the time of writing and I have a feeling
that they will end up all over the garden all by themselves! Germination is 100% and Malu khia will grow
in any soil and is extremely hardy and drought resistant due to its woody stem
and deep root system. I’m looking
forward to seeing how many bushes are going to self-propagate themselves for
next summer. This is what I call easy gardening.
