PLANTAIN – BENEFITS
Plantain is a major food staple in Africa. It is
usually cooked before being eaten. The cooking methods include boiling, frying,
baking, roasting. Plantains can be eaten at different level of ripeness, from
when it is green to when it is yellow.
Plantain is a nutritious food item with many
potential health benefits, which will be explained extensively.
• 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀
They are extraordinarily rich sources of
carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and more importantly, are easily digestible.
Plantains have served as sources of main meals for several years.

Plantains are a good source of fibre. Fibre is
important because it promotes bowel regularity. Eating a high-fibre diet could
also help reduce risk of haemorrhoids. Fibre also increases fullness, slows
digestion, and could help manage cholesterol.
The fibre and starch found in plantains are
complex carbs. Complex carbs are less processed and more slowly digested than
the simple carbs found in processed foods, hence they keep you fuller and more
satisfied for a very long time after eating, and this translates to less
snacking on unhealthy meals or junks.
Important to note is that Plantains are high in
carbs, so if a person is trying to manage their weight, they should be aware of
portion size. Also, it is very much preferable to bake or boil plantains rather
than frying them.
It is important to stat clearly that eating
plantains in moderation can greatly contribute to a very healthy diet, as they
contain essential vitamins, minerals, and fibre.
The high amount of potassium found in plantains
is required for maintaining the cell and body fluids that control the heart's
rate and blood pressure.
The fibre in plantains also helps reduce
cholesterol, which in turn keeps the heart functioning at its finest.
The benefits of Plantain are quite inexhaustible, but more shall be touched going forward. Ensure to eat Plantain regularly: Text from the roots, Elisabeth Ferkonia (Aus.) PDC studied with Bill Mollison.
