Lesson 6.47.0 COW PEA - Vigna unquiculata(L.)

The cowpea is a staple bean grown in Africa.  Cow pea or black-eyed bean is popular in many tropical cultures, as it is an easy to grow bean crop.

Cultivation

From seed to production is about seventy days and the vine will last for around four months.  Plant the beans 10cm apart in rows 50cm apart for maximum yield.  The vines will grow to two metres in length and they can be grown along the ground or on a trellis.  It is best not to plant cowpea in fertile soil where there is a high rainfall as this will encourage leaf growth at the expense of the pods.  When 90% of the pods are a golden brown it will be time for the main harvest.

After the harvest the vines make an excellent mulch for the garden.  When the pods are harvested, they can be placed into an old pillowcase and like the pigeon pea they can be processed in the same way to retrieve the beans ready for cooking or for storage. Text from the roots, Elisabeth Ferkonia (Aus.) PDC studied with Bill Mollison,
