Lesson 6.53 JACK BEAN - Canavalia ensiformis
The jack bean is a close relative of the sword bean and as such ought to be treated with the same respect. The young pods can be eaten cooked, but I have not been enticed to try it. Again, like the sword bean, jack bean is a drought hardy green manure crop that will do much to enhance soil fertility. The ideal pH is 5.6 and although jack bean will be eaten by livestock, is not a favourite. Nonclimbing varieties are reported to be good for weed control and nitrogen fixation under fruit trees.
