Lesson 8.2 PESTS - Perennial plants
FOOD FOREST COURSE
AGRO-ECONOMY Lesson 8.2
These plants are
often used in permaculture design, as they do not need to be planted every year
and therefore require less maintenance and fertilisers. They are especially important in the outer
zones and in layered systems. Some
vegetables from the tropics may become annuals in the sub-tropics.
Pest control species
These plants
provide adult predator insects with a pollen supply year-round when they
flower. The main plant families are:
Asteraceae (Daisy); Apiaceae (Carrot); Fabaceae (Pea); Brassicaceae (Cabbage)
Examples of these are:
Red, white and
strawberry clover, Carrot, White alyssum, Dill, Fennel, Marigold, Queen Ann’s
lace, Cosmos, Lucerne, Yarrow, Dandelion, Tansy, Broccoli, Baby’s breath
(gypsophila), Daikon, Buckwheat, Coriander.
Text from the roots, Elisabeth Ferkonia (Aus.) PDC
studied with Bill Mollison.
