Lesson 4.6 WEED - management
FOOD FOREST COURSE
WEED - management
Weeds are dynamic
accumulators and bring minerals from the sub-soil onto the soil surface. Weeds
naturally restore depleted soils and will continue to dominate the landscape
until soil fertility is restored. Grass will then again outgrow the weeds.
Many weeds attract
parasitic insects away from other crops, sometimes even poisoning those insects
and thus ending their threat entirely.
Weed management
Some cover crops
suppress weeds both during growth and after death. During growth these cover crops compete
vigorously with weeds for available space, light, and nutrients, and after
death they smother the next flush of weeds by forming a mulch layer on the soil
surface. Text
from the roots, Elisabeth Ferkonia (Aus.) PDC studied with Bill Mollison.
