Lesson 6.12.1 PEPINO – Harvest & Food value.
Harvesting
The fruit of the
pepino is like a cross between a cantaloupe and a melon. It is important to harvest them when they are
fully ripe for a sweet tasting result.
If they are picked before they are fully ripened, the taste is ordinary.
There are a few different varieties of pepino, and they come in various shapes and coloured markings. Some are pear or heart shaped with a few or with many seeds and others are round. They also come in colours that range from purple, to green, to green with purple stripes or cream coloured with or without purple stripes.
To determine if they are fully ripe, press with the fingers into the flesh a little and you will find a bit of ‘give’. They do bruise easily so they require careful handling. The colour of the flesh should be a light yellow to orange for optimum maturity.
Food Value
Pepinos can be
used just as a fruit to be eaten out of hand especially as a great garden snack
as they are very thirst quenching. They
are refreshing in a fruit salad and can be added to sweet curries as well.
