Lesson 6.21.0 TUMERIC - Curcuma longa L.

Turmeric is originally found in Southeast Asia and India and grows wild in the teak forests of Indonesia.  Turmeric is a member of the ginger family and like galangal; it is truly a medicine food.

Cultivation

As a native of tropical forests, turmeric does well in a semi-shaded position.  They are extremely easy to grow but will be more productive with a friable, rich soil.  From a small piece of the rhizome a new plant can be propagated, and wherever turmeric has been allowed to grow, a new plant will invariably come up the next growing season.  In fact it is so easy to grow turmeric that even a small piece of rhizome left carelessly lying on the ground will result in a new plant!

Planting time is late spring and the best time to plant is when the rhizomes, that are stored in moist saw dust or in your garden from a previous crop, are beginning to sprout.

The turmeric plant has a very beautiful white or yellow orchid like flower growing along the stem and has a subtle gorgeous perfume.

Harvesting

The rhizomes may be dug up when the entire tops have died down.  This is towards the end of autumn.  It’s always fun to dig up any of the tubers that have been growing in the garden.  You never quite know what to expect.  Whenever I dig up the turmeric, I have visions of those fat juicy fingers that are attached to the main stem and visualise all to be perfect specimens.  There is an innate satisfaction of harvesting any of these tubers and it really puts a new slant to grovelling in the dirt!

The turmeric rhizomes are pale yellow or a bright orange in colour and yes, they do stain everything in sight.  Fortunately, the stains disappear in a few days.Text from the roots, Elisabeth Ferkonia (Aus.) PDC studied with Bill Mollison,
