MUKUNU WENNA - Althernanthera triandra sp.


Mukunu wenna is an exceptionally easy to grow ground cover that is very drought hardy and is also tolerant on wet ground.  It is useful to grow in areas that need to outgrow grass such as in orchards and food forest gardens.  It is not as hard wearing as the pinto peanut is but it is a very useful plant to use for ground cover in drier areas where the pinto will not take easily (different plants for different situations).


The small leaves can be used as salad additions or in stir fries but these need to be of succulent growth and where no one is walking through it.  Hanging baskets are also useful for growing the mukunu wenna for the sole purpose of greens.  As with any of these greens, the more you pick them the more succulent the comeback growth becomes.  I have noticed that with very wet weather the leaves really expand in size so perhaps they’re not worth eating unless they are growing in hot and wet conditions.

 

There is also a red variety, but I have found it to be less hardy than the green variety.  Mine kept on disappearing and when this happens to me it’s not worth growing in my book!
