AGRO-ECONOMY Lesson 6.50
MUCUNA - Mucuna pruriens
Mucuna belongs to the velvet bean family. Mucuna is sometimes called magic bean, as it
is one of the most productive green manure crops in the tropics. Farmers in South America intercrop mucuna in
with their corn and the nitrogen levels increase tremendously thus ensuring
bumper crops.
Mucuna is not
as drought resistant as the jack bean and sword bean but will keep growing 3-4
months into the dry season without irrigation.
All velvet beans will first cover the ground almost completely and then
climb vigorously along corn stalks etc.
The stems remain thin and woody, and the plant dies after it has set
seed. If seeds are allowed to remain,
they will germinate themselves and come back even more vigorous than the
previous season. Waterlogged soils and
soils with a pH of 4.5 or less will not favour the growth of this legume. Most livestock, except for chickens, will
find mucuna a palatable high protein fodder crop. The mucuna bean has a novel appeal as a
coffee extender or even as a coffee substitute.
