MUSHROOM PLANT - Rungia klossii

The mushroom plant grows wild in PNG and is often gathered by hunting parties in the highlands as an addition to their hunting and gathering fare.  It is a very old traditional highlands plant and wild forms are still found growing in the bush.  The mushroom plant likes to grow in damp and shady conditions and the leaves are very easy to eat and taste rather mushrooms.

The leaves are dark green, and they have a high nutritional value.  They are valuable both raw and cooked.  The plant is mature at three to four months and when it is about a foot high.  The tips and two or three leaves per plant at a time should be picked.  The leaves further down the stem become quite tough so its best to keep to the top of the plant for picking.  In PNG there is no specific time of the year for planting the mushroom plant and as with all tropical plants they will do better in the warm and wet growing season.  Rungia is propagated by placing several cuttings in one hole and fortunately pests or disease seldom attacks these plants.

Text from the roots, Elisabeth Ferkonia (Aus.) PDC studied with Bill Mollison.
